Very Large Bluegill?

My brother had a few minutes to burn before work today so he decided to hit a local lake and catch bluegill.  After hookin’ a few of our warm water friends, he managed to get the attention of this rather large, urban variety, bluegill using his 9′ 5wt with 4x tippet, a strike indicator and a #14 flashback PT.   So….just what exactly do they feed those fish in the OC?

Nice catch bro!

Fly Fishing the Owens

De’ and I were able to get some fly fishing in on the Lower Owens, just outside of Bishop, only to be met with throngs of people, bitter cold winds and an unexpected reservoir spill which nearly ruined the fishing for both of us on Saturday, but not our spirits.  Always chasing after the next adventure, we redoubled our efforts starting early in the wild trout section for a few unfruitful hours then headed up to the Upper Owens.  What a contrast!  Mild temperatures, gentle breezes, partly cloudy skies and easy wading made for a perfect closure to the trout opener weekend.  It was nearly a non-stop bite fishing upstream in the seams using a #18 gray crystal zebra midge on 5x tippet.  I caught and released 15 for the weekend.  Here are a few pics for the masses.  Enjoy!

Bishop Run II

I thought I’d post some pictures of our run up to Bishop, while the video is still being cut…

For those of you that went to the Trout Opener in Bishop, you know it was cold and you probably know the current flows were fast and the water level was high.

That being said Fishing sucked on Saturday; Which was good for us as it weeded out most if not all the other Fisher-Person’s. Like I said Saturday was almost a flop, The exception was when we left the lower Owens and headed off to Pleasant Valley (where we ended our day). Sunday was a productive  day with awesome weather on the upper Owens.

Be sure to check back for our video!

UrbanFlyFlickr Meets PrimalFlyFishing

Yesterday I met up with James from PrimalFly.com for some L.A. River Fishing!

This being my second time to the river, I figured this would be a good opportunity for me to learn some new skillz.

James quickly showed me the ropes and explained, how to target these fish. Some cool things to know about these fish is that they tend to cruise in the shallows looking for food, they mouth the food(meaning they’ll suck it in and spit it out), so hooking one can be difficult if you can’t see it.

Watching James hook one of these thingz, had to be one of the neatest sights, the fight these fish give is awesome!

Azusa Canyon: East Fork Fly Fishing

Today BB And I decided to hit the East Fork, if you havn’t heard of this section of water, I suggest you check it out!

This fine gem has some awesome wild trout and natives, the water is clear, and just to boast it’s less than 3omins from my house!

Today I decided to fish with Wet Flies, they are the same flies I received a couple of days ago from our friends at fishingfliesonline, I have to say these flies worked awesome, I’ve never fished with a wet fly before and was suprised with the results.

Below I have the fly I used and some pics of the results

If your interested in the technique we used for fishing these fly’s check out our Urban Fly Techniques page.

You’ve Got Mail!

When was the last time you anticipated getting something in the mail? I know I dread getting bills in the mail, but who doesn’t.

Today I received some new Fishing Flies in the mail, So I was stoked! not quite Christmas stoked, but stoked non the less.

So the deal with these Flies is they cost 1.00 a piece and with each order you get a free fly box and free shipping!

I purchased a Dry Fly starter kit that has 24 flies for the price of 22 bux, in addtion to that i also ordered 8 wet flies (going old skool), Making the Grand Total of flies received 32, for an overall cost of 30 bux shipped.

The last time I purchased flies at my local shop it cost me roughly 30 dollars and i only got 12 flies, OK maybe 14, but i still didn’t get a fly box with that purchase.

Bottom Line is I think I got a deal with this purchase and the flies look to be very good quality. Check out the pics I posted below this post.

Do you know of any smoking deals?

Urban Fly Fishing on a Budget?

I show up at my local fly shop the day before I’m supposed to go on my fly fishing trip and ask anyone who looks like they work there, “I’m goin’ fishin’ on the Catchemall river!  What flies do you recommend?”

A sales associate turns around and for a split second, there’s an eerily familiar sparkle in his eye.  Similar to the kind you see when a used-car salesman is about to close the sale.  “OH! The Catchemall river?  Well, you’ll need some of these baby-blue, semi-transparent, triple tungsten beadhead, rhino nymphs with rainbow tinsel in size 16, 18 and 20!  I tied ‘em myself.  They’re a real hum dinger! Caught several twenty-three inchers on that river on the first drift the other day!”

“Well, I’ll take nine of those please, three of each size”, I proclaim rather confidently without even asking the price.

“Great!  Will that be all for you?”, he asks.

“Yup!”, I reply with a healthy smile.

“That’ll be thrity-eight ninety-seven.”

*GULP*….My smile slowly turns into a frown.   I don’t say a word.  I’m both shocked at how much I’m going to spend for nine flies that I’ll probably loose in the first hour of fishing and I’m too darn proud turn away the flies at the counter ‘cuz I don’t want to inconvenience the gentlemen that sold ‘em to me.

Sound familiar?

Don’t get me wrong.  I think we should do everything we can to support our local fly fishing stores but I think you can save a few bucks by purchasing some of the basics elsewhere.  And spend the real money on that bamboo fly fishing rod that you’ve been drooling over.

Well, I was pleasantly surprised to walk into the Brea Sport’s Chalet and found a small but effective selection of wet and dry flies, prepackaged and ready to go.  They’re made by Pacific Fly Group and they averaged about $1.00 – $1.50 each.  I bought two 10-packs of Assorted Color – Crystal Zebra Nymphs for $10 each.  20 flys for $20 bucks. And no used-car salesmen.   Now you’re talking.

So where do you pick up flies on a budget? Post it in the comments below!

Tight Lines!
