Tenkara fishing offers an traditional Japanese style of fly fishing, that is meant to be simpler, and lighter for small streams.
If you havn’t seen this style of fishing before and are into light weight, back packable gear, this maybe for you. I know we will be looking into this soon.

I was looking at my copy of Fly Fish America, I ran across a clothing comany, based out of Italy.
I can’t say much for the company other than they are a bunch of Fishing Enthusiast, that seem to have found a niche, with some cool gear!
Check em out!

When was the last time you anticipated getting something in the mail? I know I dread getting bills in the mail, but who doesn’t.
Today I received some new Fishing Flies in the mail, So I was stoked! not quite Christmas stoked, but stoked non the less.
So the deal with these Flies is they cost 1.00 a piece and with each order you get a free fly box and free shipping!
I purchased a Dry Fly starter kit that has 24 flies for the price of 22 bux, in addtion to that i also ordered 8 wet flies (going old skool), Making the Grand Total of flies received 32, for an overall cost of 30 bux shipped.
The last time I purchased flies at my local shop it cost me roughly 30 dollars and i only got 12 flies, OK maybe 14, but i still didn’t get a fly box with that purchase.
Bottom Line is I think I got a deal with this purchase and the flies look to be very good quality. Check out the pics I posted below this post.
Do you know of any smoking deals?

I show up at my local fly shop the day before I’m supposed to go on my fly fishing trip and ask anyone who looks like they work there, “I’m goin’ fishin’ on the Catchemall river! What flies do you recommend?”
A sales associate turns around and for a split second, there’s an eerily familiar sparkle in his eye. Similar to the kind you see when a used-car salesman is about to close the sale. “OH! The Catchemall river? Well, you’ll need some of these baby-blue, semi-transparent, triple tungsten beadhead, rhino nymphs with rainbow tinsel in size 16, 18 and 20! I tied ‘em myself. They’re a real hum dinger! Caught several twenty-three inchers on that river on the first drift the other day!”
“Well, I’ll take nine of those please, three of each size”, I proclaim rather confidently without even asking the price.
“Great! Will that be all for you?”, he asks.
“Yup!”, I reply with a healthy smile.
“That’ll be thrity-eight ninety-seven.”
*GULP*….My smile slowly turns into a frown. I don’t say a word. I’m both shocked at how much I’m going to spend for nine flies that I’ll probably loose in the first hour of fishing and I’m too darn proud turn away the flies at the counter ‘cuz I don’t want to inconvenience the gentlemen that sold ‘em to me.
Sound familiar?
Don’t get me wrong. I think we should do everything we can to support our local fly fishing stores but I think you can save a few bucks by purchasing some of the basics elsewhere. And spend the real money on that bamboo fly fishing rod that you’ve been drooling over.
Well, I was pleasantly surprised to walk into the Brea Sport’s Chalet and found a small but effective selection of wet and dry flies, prepackaged and ready to go. They’re made by Pacific Fly Group and they averaged about $1.00 – $1.50 each. I bought two 10-packs of Assorted Color – Crystal Zebra Nymphs for $10 each. 20 flys for $20 bucks. And no used-car salesmen. Now you’re talking.
So where do you pick up flies on a budget? Post it in the comments below!

I’m no pro when it comes to fishing, let alone fly fishing. (This is my disclaimer) Typically, when I’m fly fishing, I tend to fish a spot for a few minutes, then reel up and move on. What I find to be a pain is dealing with long leaders and getting the line in the water. My perfection loop or double surgeon knot gets caught in the last eyelet/guide and, even worse, when I have to re-tie my tapered leader in the wind.
With this in mind I was browsing around in our local Wal-Mart’s fly fishing section and I found these:
Scientific Anglers L2L Reconnect System.

Seeing this I thought, “Wow, this would kill two birds with one stone!” You can forget all those complicated knots (a boon for the amateur fly fisher like myself) and still have a way of changing out your line very quickly, assuming you have it prepared.
Here’s a break down of how to attach it.

Fairly simple.
The L2L system uses a color code for different sizes of tapered leader (for example, 5x is orange and the 6x is red). An excellent idea as this helps organize them. Another nice feature is the fact that it’s reusable, meaning you can pull the old leader/tippet out and replace it with your own preferred brand and still use the L2L connectors. Yet another benefit is the connector doubles as a built in indicator. The only problem there being the inability to adjust its location based on the current conditions.
All in all a nice system. Now for the test! Does it glide through the guides?
The answer is yes and no. I found it will move through every guide freely except for the tip. It’s as much of a pain as the perfection loop. I still have to put down the rod and pull it through the tip before I can cast. Bummer. On the bright side and can switch out between 5x and 6x in a matter of seconds.
All of my testing was done out in the field. I sat down next to the water and attached the system. It took less than 5 minutes to get everything together and working.
The system works, for the most part, and I would recommend it to anyone that does not know how to tie a good knot or for someone who wants to switch the leader/tippet in a flash.

**More to come on this we still need to stress test the connectors
